Sorry about the vague description. I had trouble uploading the screenshot because my connection kept timing out. In the end I had to scp the png to the server , then use lynx ON the server to upload it TO the server. Crazy. Of course after having typed in the full comment about ten times, the last time I just threw a word in.
What I was supposed to say is :
"Nautilus can be comfigured to have a pseud-split view, not perfect but still useful. I'd suggest this feature request to the devs, if I wasn't afraid I'd get the HIG rammed down my throat.
Actually I might take up the task my self, it's supposed to be easy, add the icon view to the left hand pane."

due to upgrading to drupal 6.4, I still don't have image module.
