I think arabic was fixed only in versions 0.44 and above. I am currently running 0.44.1 and arabic still works fine. You can use any font that has arabic glyphs, like Bitstream or arabeyes font package.
Thanks for this. It is always great to have people checking out features of inkscape like this and making sure it all works properly. If you do find any problems please be sure to let us know. It is not everyday we have Arabic speakers who can also communicate any problems to the English speaking developers. With your help we could bring Inkscape (and other open source software like Abiword, hint, hint) to a much wider audience.
Thanks for taking an interest, this stuff would never happen without you and million others all taking an interest and each contributing in their own way.
I am honored that you looked at my page and you are thanking me :)
Actually it is we ( the Arabic speakers ) that have to thank you, for having fixed the Arabic display in the new version of inkscape.
I always try to test any open source software ( I prefer gtk+2/gnome2 ) that I lay my hands on and see if Arabic works out of the box. If not I try to dig into the problem as far as my knowledge allows me, and always file a bug report.
It's very encouraging to deal with friendly developers like you who are ready to volunteer their time to help internationalization efforts. It's what makes the open source community so rich.
For the upcoming version of phaeronix I am investigating including the new gnome-office stack instead of the monolithic OpenOffice. I wish that gnome-office reaches the functionality level of open-office ( without the bloat! ).
I promise to help as much as I can with my limited knowledge :)
