Wireless Connections and dialups

How do I set up a wireless or dialup connection?
I want to browse the Internet via Phaeronix.
I think my winmodem may be at fault -- my setup says I have no modem at all, yet I get online perfectly well on the "windows" side of my new laptop.

Only hardware modems can work without external drivers.
Rarely a modem may be supported by alsa's modem modules.
None of the kernels support software modems aka winmodems out of the box.

You can get external drivers for most of the winmodems that exist these days but there might be limitations.

Lucent modems and smartlink modems have the best drivers ( relatively ).
Conexant modems have free drivers from linuxant that work at 14.4 Kbps , but can be made to work at full speed if you purchase the driver from linuxant.
Motorola modems don't have drivers and are generally fit only as paper weights.

Please provide more information as to what exactly is the problem and your system information.

last time i checked, the winmodem drivers for linux (linuxant) were commercial.. the 2.4 series of the kernel support winmodems, so if your laptop is running fine with 2.4, move to it..
